The Harper dictionary of modern thought
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Authors: Alan Bullock and Oliver Stallybrass
Average review score:

Knowledge of its Own Limitations
The edition which I have, from 1977, copyright by Alan Bullock and Oliver Stallybrass, was originally published in England under the title The Fontana Dictionary of Modern Thought. I bought it because sometimes it might be better than the encyclopedia which was a family purchase when my children were in elementary school. The point may be that the knowledge which it presents attempts to limit itself to those things which experts in a field might agree with, instead of the kind of sweeping generalizations which the modern media have made the standard of pseudo-intellectual views commonly available to the point of intellectual asphyxiation. This book does not express an opinion directly on psychotic multiplicity, but there is an entry written by D. J. Enright, a poet, novelist, critic, editor, and publisher on "dissociation of sensibility" as the concept was used by T. S. Eliot in an essay, "The Metaphysical Poets." (1921) It applied to examples from Donne and Milton in which thinking and feeling were split, but success in this realm of thought is now deemed not to be "as precise in its effects as a lobotomy. The truth is that dissociation of sensibility has always been with us, and that unification of sensibility is a rare phenomenon, not always possible and perhaps not always called for." (p. 177) Don't expect this work to be a best-seller. This kind of thing is necessary only for those who need to know such wisdom as it contains.

An indispensable reference book
I love this book and often just browse through it out of pure curiosity. For the most part, "The Harper Dictionary of Modern Thought," is an indispensable reference book that belongs in every home library. Our book has also had steady usage from our kids who normally gravitate to the Harper Dictionary as High School term paper deadlines approach.

The Harper Dictionary explains 4,000 key terms, from philosophy, psychology, the natural and social sciences, history and politics, the arts and religion. In each case the text provides short, clear explanations written by 140 leading British and American experts. The text also provides excellent cross references to aid further investigation. All in all, this a handy academic tool to have around.

Quite frankly, this is a very impressive collection of information but one should not be intimidated. It is easy to use...(the authors dedicate a section at the beginning of the text on how to use the book). For example, as I open it to page 545, it has..."Rio Treaty, risk analysis, rites of passage." Each subject includes concise sentences with bibliographical references. This is a great book to have at home to explore areas of ignorance.

Diamond in the Rough (Harper Monogram)

A Great Read!
I love this book. And what an unusual setting for the romance. A home for unwed mothers. Prudence and Brock are made for each other.

The most delightful thing about the book is the people you think you're going to hate end up being good guys. Even the villain gets the correct come-uppance in the end and turns out to be sort of OK.

The unwed mothers add much to the story. They don't seem to be just incidental. And their stories are so individual. I got teary at a certain point in the book but don't want to give away that part of the story by telling of it here. For the most part, the book is fairly upbeat and lovely read.

Get it used or from your library. But read it. Now, I want to read some others of Ms. Criswell's books. This was her first for me.

Entrepreneurship and the Market Process: An Enquiry into the Growth of Knowledge (Foundations of the Market Economy)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (09 January, 1996)
Author: David A. Harper
Average review score:

Learning theory applied to entrepreneurship
In contrast to theories of entrepreneurs which portray them as heroic figures, omniscient clairvoyants, or lucky fools, Harper argues that, like all humans, entrepreneurs can learn from their experience. They make reasonable conjectures, observe what happens, and then revise the theories and assumptions that led to the conjecture. Some are very good at this, but many -- probably most -- are not. Consequently, any theory of entrepreneurship must address the pervasive phenomenon of entrepreneurial failure and losses. The book is based on Harper's dissertation. Unlike most such books which are prematurely published, before their authors' ideas had time to mature, this book reflects the enormous amount of work Harper put into reviewing the relevant literature in economics (his field), psychology, philosophy, and other fields. Harper's intellectual mentor is Karl Popper, and he does an excellent job in summarizing Popper's ideas and applying them to the entrepreneurial problem: learning in the face of vast uncertainty. This is NOT a book for practicing enterpreneurs, but rather for people interested in theories of entrepreneurship. Harper's perspective represents a welcome challenge to the "instrumentalist" and "entrepreneurial alertness" views that now enjoy wide currency. It is a major contribution to the emerging evolutionary view of entreprenership.

Great book to read, especially on a rainy day!
I picked this book up and before I knew it I was almost halfway through it. I was caught up in the story and wanted to find out what happened next. I have the bad habit of reading ahead to see what happens, but I didn't this time and was very glad I didn't. What a great surprise ending!

One of the best resources available for beginning investors
This book provides some of the best and most comprehensive information for the beginning investor. It details the basics of investing vehicles in a consise and easy to comprehend resource. It should be a "must read" for anyone ready to begin a serious investment program. Not a "how to" book on investing but rather an explanatory book of investment options.

Harlem: The Making of a Ghetto: Negro New York, 1890-1930 (Harper Torchbooks, Tb 1572)
Published in Paperback by Harpercollins College Div (July, 1971)
Author: Gilbert Osofsky
Average review score:

An endearing look at one of society's ills
Osofsky really gets into the subject of ghetto creation. Unlike the European immigrants who ghettoized themselves and then were able to climb up society's ladder, Osofsky argues that this possibility was inaccessible to Harlem's black population, with minor exceptions.. As a student of Chicago's housing issues, this is as true today as it was in the beginning of the last century. As a result of this moving book, I feel like I have lived in the squalor of Harlem's ghettos and slums, and I have never been to NYC.

Harper Collins Atlas of World History

Author: Geoffre Barraclough
Average review score:

Great coffee-table history!
Each gorgeous, full-color, oversize spread covers a different historical topic or region through the years, complete with maps, charts, and concise text. Examples include "The Spread of Islam from AD 632", "The Industrial Revolution in Europe", "The Russian Revolution 1917 to 1925." Overall the exposition is engaging and to-the-point. The authors are British; this shows up both in the spelling and in the text's occasionally rather tendentious interpretation of events, particularly those involving the United States "hegemony." For example, the election of Ronald Reagan is attributed to "Nationalism, a tax-payer's revolt, and a widespread wish to be reassured..." and Carter is not even mentioned.

But overall, this book is worth having for the overall quality of its presentation and the sheer volume of little facts packed into its maps and diagrams.

Harper's Bride
Published in Paperback by Topaz (October, 1997)
Authors: Alexis Harrington and Harrington Alexis
Average review score:

Romantic and feel-good reading
The reasons I gave it 4 rating I really liked the heroine and hero and the plot was believable and most importantly, there was charaters development. You find the characters hurt by the past and the way their loved ones has betrayed and mistreated them. Yet, both are not willing to let it get them down. It's not the racy novel that speaks volume of sexual tensions, but one of awakening and deep love. I think it's novel worth keepng and just a good read on a rainy night. Good Recommendation.
